American Saturn cars soon will copy German Opel ones according to GM officials announcement. Saturn’s destiny will be like of British Vauxhall manufacturing Opel cars under its brand name.
Actually Opels will be exported from Germany under Saturn name. US manufactured Saturn will be mostly identical to Germany manufactured ones.
The first Saturn model borrowed from Opel will be Ion – copy of Opel Astra. In addition in 2007 Saturn Aura is expected to come out basing on Opel Vectra platform.
Still Saturn and Opel model line-up will not coincide fully. As Rick Wagoner, GM head, Saturn will continue to manufacture its own original models like Outlook model with crossover body type.
For the record, Saturn came in 1980s as GM’s response to Asian car manufacturers expansion into US car market. For the moment Saturn includes four model families – Sky, Ion, Vue and Relay.
