Fiat (FIAT, Fabrica Italiana Automobili Torino), the biggest Italian automobile corporation, manufactures cars, trucks, industrial and agricultural equipment. The corporation also owns aerospace industry enterprises. Central office located in Turin.
The company was established in 1899 by a group of investors, including Giovanni Agnelli, and initiated automobiles assembling under Renault license with De Dion engines. From the very beginning Agnelli inserted socialistic ideals into manufacturing procedures stretching possibility of workers – owners mutual full understanding.
In 1903 in Italy steel importing dues were removed urging quick industry extending: soon original taxi cars, trucks and buses were manufactured; production of engines for air planes and ships was launched.
Fiat automobiles destined for rich consumers within short period became popular both in Italy and in world market. At the same time Fiat cars were recognized due to successful participation in car racings along with such car companies as Lancia, Storero, Miller, Nazzaro.
First serious and effective claim as car manufacturer Fiat made by construction S61 model with 10.5 engine which won Grand Prix France 1911.
Soon Giovanni Agnelli came to the conclusion that the company should leave cottage car manufacturing and move towards serial car construction.
In 1912 automobile manufacturing under F.I.A.T. was initiated. In addition Giovanni Agnelli was in the vanguard of those who realized the important of specific style for every car manufacturer.
Pioneer model in this relation came Fiat Tipo Zero, 1912 produced. The design of this model was not standing out for its originality and was similar to other manufacturers’ models; in order to add the model individuality Agnelli was choosing between several variants constructed as well as started to cooperate with car body specialists - Locati & Toretta, Zagato, Touring.
They were designing bodies for Fiat serial models.
From the very start, in 1909 Fiat managed to establish car manufacturing abroad – US based "Poughkeepsie" plant (1909). In 1922 Fiat launched “Lingotto” project aimed at creating widely available automobile. The purpose was reached due to basically new principles of production organization based on assembling line.
WW I made Fiat Italy car industry leader. By early 1920 Fiat became the biggest company in Italy owing mainly to its smart administrating manager – Vittorio Valetta. Still in 1919 – 1920 Fiat and Agnelli personally experienced several serious labour strikes entailed with enterprises and company premises seizures. The leaders of striking workers were Antonio Palmiro and Antonio Gramsci. As a result manufacturing facilities were nearly ruined. With Benito Mussolini coming to governing Giovanni Agnelli came back to Fiat’s ruling.
