Gradually the company integrated such significant for automobile production history firms as Bellanger and De Dion-Bouton (in 1927), which used to be a great one. Even during the years of Great Depression the company managed to keep its market positions by producing improved small automobiles available to a big target group of customers. Peugeot 402 sedan was an attempt to retain the middle-class car market. During World War II Peugeot enterprise was under Volkswagen control.
After the war the company’s politics of increasing production of midget cars blended successfully with general European tendencies. However in 60ies in accordance with market demands Peugeot in collaboration with an outstanding body designer Pininfarina constructed new models targeting a more demanding and well-to-do customers.
In 1966 Peugeot signed an agreement with Renault concerning joining their technical resources; Swedish Volvo concern also joined this agreement.
In 1974 Peugeot united into concern with Citroen (in addition to Peugeot it integrated the Panhard-Levassor division, which is now the world leader of armored car production); in 1978 Chrysler Europe joined Peugeot and became the base of its Talbot division (Talbot produced both passenger cars and trucks). The company also kept its leading positions in European market of bicycles and motorcycles.
Despite of its small size Peugeot 205 was a great success for the company. Advancement of this original car endured from 1983 till 1995; its success was even reflected in French advertising slogan – “the 205 - one heck of a number” (concerning the model’s index).
The first public presentation of Peugeot 605 occurred in Frankfurt in 1989 and since then was modernized for several times. Since 1998 the car was offered as the most complete version Signature. The most comfortable and fashionable middle-class sedan of Peugeot series, model 605 was replaced with Peugeot 607. Further modifications of its engine, body and interior took place in 1993 and 1995.
