Saab (Saab, Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget), Swedish company specializing in cars and trucks manufacturing. Headquarters located in Trollhettanne. Currently Saab stays in General Motors ownship.

Saab company was established in April, 1937 as war-planes manufacturer. The idea of car manufacturing was born after WW II when small group of air-engineers headed by Gunnar Ljungstreм was attached to “Sixten Sason” technical laboratory, Saab’s subdivision. Ljungstreм concept played decisive role in construction of the first test model in Saab history – Saab 92.001, compact class car completely issued in 1946. But from this very first model Saab gained its outstanding features inherited from air planes – fine-aerodynamic body and independent suspension.

First Saabs were equipped with DKW two-piston engines subsequently removed for more powerful models.
1949 was marked in Saab history by big sportive sedans model line initiating including Saab Standart 92 and 92 DeLuxe modifications.

In 1955 new Saab 93 model came up with tubeless tires and new 3-cylinder engine.
In 1956 Saab constructed Sonett - new premium class sportive model with open top. Its body was produced of glass-fiber material.

But commercial prosperity of the company was enabled by Saab 95 estate model created in 1959. Next Saab 96 was popular in car market of 1960s. Additionally the company gained renown due to victories in international competitions: Eric Carlsson with Saab 96 three years in a row (1960-1962) took victories in British rally championship as well as in Monte Carlo rally of 1962-63.

In fact Saab occurred a pioneer in many aspects of car security issues as in 1962 its cars were attached with safety belts, disc vented brakes and resistant door pillars. Top priority in car manufacturing for Saab became driver and passengers comfort. So 99 model was arranged with headlights wipers, seat heating system and self-repair bumpers.

In 1968 came important event in Saab history as it merged with trucks manufacturer company – Scania – Vabis.
After Steve Blomqvist in 1971 won two world rally races with the same Saab 99 model the company’s interest towards sportive cars manufacturing faded excepting construction of Saab Sonett II two-seater destined purely for American market.

Subsequently Saab stopped manufacturing sportive models as it was the last one in company history.
Concurrently Saab focused its facilities on 99 model further developing and improving. As a result in 1978 Saab 900 appeared joining prestigious and expensive class cars. Since 1979 Saab commenced its collaboration in car designing with Lancia company.

In 1984 Saab history was marked by 9000 model construction. It was company’s third evolutional milestone changes.
