produced since 1994 with 3- and 5-door hatchback, Volkswagen Polo classic sedan and 5-door Volkswagen Variant estate bodies and gasoline or diesel 4-cylinder motors of 1.0 1.9-liter displacement and 50-101 horsepower output.
The comfortable Volkswagen Vento family of the 1st generation was equipped with 4- and 6-cylinder motors of 1.6 2.8-liter displacement, 75 174 horsepower output.
Since 1995 high-capacity estate car Volkswagen Sharan was released as 5-7-seated model with front-wheel and all-wheel drive. The power capacity of their gasoline and diesel engines of 1.9 - 2.8-liter displacement was within the range of 90-174 horsepower.
Volkswagen Passat family of the 5th generation was introduced in 1996. Unlike the preceding models released since 1988 Volkswagens of this family were unified with single-type Audi A4 and A6 models. That allowed using more powerful and up-to-date Audi power units with lengthwise engine alignment. Volkswagen Passat car were only produced with sedan and 5-door estate Variant body styles and equipped with 4-, 5- and 6-cylinder gasoline and diesel motors of 1.6 2.8-liter displacement with 90 193 horsepower horse power output. Several Volkswagen Variant models of Syncro configuration had all-wheel drive chassis.
In 1999 a new Volkswagen sedan Bora was released.
Several Volkswagen branch offices in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and China produced models differing drastically from European Volkswagen models. They were Volkswagen Gol, Volkswagen Parati and Volkswagen Santana built on chassis of Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Passat of preceding generations.
The Mexican branch kept on producing Volkswagen 1.6i models of Beetle type with 1.6-liter motor with 44 horsepower output; since 1998 they set up production of a brand-new front-wheel drive Volkswagen Beetle with Volkswagen Golf chassis, which was designed just like the famous good old beetle.
Today Volkswagen concern has one of the highest sales rates among world car enterprises; they established plants in 15 world countries and release products of 5 trademarks, these are Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and SEAT. Since 1998 Rolls-Royce brand-name is also the property of Volkswagen. In addition to passenger cars Volkswagen also produces trucks and minivans.
