Do you know the very first Porsche was hand built?! It was produced in 1948 in the small town of Gmünd, Austria. This model was called 356/1. It was an open-topped, mid engined roadster.

This model was really "hand built".., its aluminium body was hand beaten!!! Moreover all the engine and drive train components were made without a machine shop. Amazing…, isn’t it?!

As to technical performances, so they were not so impressive. The first Porsche had a 1.1 liter engine, making 40 horsepower. Its top speed was over 135kph (85mph). There were roughly 65 cars of this unique model produced. Today the rare cars are known as the Gmünd Coupes.

Porsche number 356/1 , was the only one model with the engine fixed in front of the rear axle.
